The history of our National Parks is as diverse as the wildlife and scenery.

Yellowstone was the first National Park to be established and was first managed by the Army.

The railroad empire was very involved with the development of Glacier National Park and the building of the hotels and backcountry chalets.

We have provided you with a list of the 10 most-visited U.S. National Parks during 2010.

You do not need to make reservations to enter the National Parks. Only one national park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, does not charge an entrance fee.

If you are planning on staying overnight, you will need to make reservations for lodging inside or outside the National Park. Millions of people visit the National Parks, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so planning ahead and getting National Park reservations for lodging, popular ranger-guided hikes, and campgrounds is a good idea.

Redwall Cavern Many people head to our National Parks for the recreational activities which include rock climbing, rafting, bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing, hiking, canoeing, and of course camping!

Many of the parks like Glacier, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain and Yosemite are famous for the backpacking and backcountry camping.  The mountain weather makes the experience a challenge and it isn't uncommon to experience a snowstorm during every month of the year.

Campgrounds in the parks can fill up early and are on a first-come-first-served basis.  There is usually ample additional camping outside the parks if you get there too late.

The National Parks also offer some very unique lodging experiences. Glacier National Park has the famous backcountry chalets (Granite Park and Sperry). Yellowstone has the Yellowstone Inn at Old Faithful as well as numerous small quaint cabins for rent.

Lodging adjacent to the parks usually consists of hotels and rental cabins. One of the most famous is The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park. Remember the movie "The Shining"? It was filmed at The Stanley Hotel and staying there will provide you with memories that will last a lifetime!
